A small hermitage was built in honour of Our Lady of Penha (Nossa Senhora da Penha), which gave the site its name.

The site also features the ruins of a 20th-century manor house, an ambitious but incomplete project by its last private owner, António Carvalho Monteiro, who also owned Quinta da Regaleira.
