Sanctuary of Peninha

Portugal - Lisboa

Tucked away in the scenic Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, the Sanctuary of Peninha (Santuario da Peninha) is a magical spot offering breathtaking views and a serene atmosphere. Perched atop a rocky outcrop, this lesser-known site combines natural beauty with intriguing history, making it a perfect destination for those seeking tranquillity and inspiration.

The History of Peninha

The Sanctuary of Peninha dates back to the 17th century, although the site has been significant for centuries. Legend suggests it was a sacred place long before the construction of the sanctuary, associated with ancient pagan rituals and later Christian worship. A small hermitage was built in honour of Our Lady of Penha (Nossa Senhora da Penha), which gave the site its name.

The site also features the ruins of a 20th-century manor house, an ambitious but incomplete project by its last private owner, António Carvalho Monteiro, who also owned Quinta da Regaleira.

Spectacular Views

Peninha offers some of the best panoramic views in the Sintra region. From its summit, you can see the vast Atlantic Ocean, the rugged coastline, Cabo da Roca, and even the Lisbon skyline on a clear day. The dramatic cliffs and rolling green hills create an unforgettable landscape.
