Museu Dr. Mário Bento
Portugal - Castelo Branco
Housed in the repurposed and expanded former olive oil mill of the Cameira family, the Museu Dr. Mário Bento in Meimoa, Penamacor, showcases a rich collection of archaeological and ethnographic artefacts donated by its namesake, Dr. Mário Pires Bento. The museum preserves the original industrial equipment and furniture of the mill, offering visitors a unique glimpse into the region’s heritage.
The museum’s first floor features the reception area and the original mill, complete with its functional spaces and mechanical equipment. The second floor includes a workspace, a museum reserve, and an exhibition area dedicated to Dr. Bento’s collection. The exhibits are organised into three main sections: two ethnographic displays focusing on bread and wine, and an archaeological section highlighting Roman presence in the Meimoa area. The museum’s narrative centres on the agricultural trilogy of olives, cereals, and vines, staples from Roman times that persisted into the 20th century.
