The Monument to the Heroes of the Peninsular War (Monumento aos Heróis da Guerra Peninsular) stands prominently in Porto’s Rotunda da Boavista (Praça de Mouzinho de Albuquerque). This monument commemorates the joint Portuguese and British forces’ victory over Napoleon’s armies during the Peninsular War (1808–1814).
Designed by architect José Marques da Silva and sculptor Alves de Sousa, construction began in 1909 but faced delays due to global conflicts and the early death of Alves de Sousa. The monument was eventually completed under the direction of sculptors Henrique Moreira and José Sousa Caldas, and inaugurated in 1952.
The monument features a 45-metre granite column topped by a lion overpowering an eagle, symbolising the Portuguese and British triumph over Napoleon’s forces. At the base, intricate sculptures depict scenes from the war, including representations of Generals Sepúlveda and Silveira, as well as the “Ponte das Barcas” disaster, where thousands perished during a French assault on Porto.
The Rotunda da Boavista, where the monument is situated, is a significant roundabout in Porto, encompassing a peaceful, tree-lined garden amidst the bustling city. Nearby landmarks include the Casa da Música, a renowned modern music venue.
