Aljezur Castle

January, 2019

Aljezur Castle, Algarve, Portugal

The castle stands overlooking the town of Aljezur, it was originally built in the 10th century by Arabs and was an important part of the defensive system in the region.

Not much remains of the castle now except the outer walls but the panoramic views are spectacular. You can look over Igreja Nova to the Monchique mountains to the east and to the west, the Atlantic Ocean.

It is not an easy walk from the town but you can drive up and there is parking below the castle.  The castle itself has uneven ground so caution is advised.  There are no facilities.

Ideal for:

  • solo travellers
  • couples
  • picnics
  • short walks
